ST. PAUL BOYS FINISH SECOND IN TIGER CLASSIC
The first game of three for the Cardinals in the Tiger Classic Tournament held February 22-24 was not too much of a challenge for the A team boys as they faced St. Paul’s Fort Atkinson. For one of the first games of the season the Cardinals laid off their press but still managed to pull away with an easy victory by a modest score of 35-16.
The second game for St. Paul Lake Mills was much more difficult than the first. They faced TSL. The game was locked up with constant lead changes between the two teams. With about a minute and a half left in the game, the score was tied at 26 all, and the Cardinals were shooting critical free throws. Michael Hermanny, at the line shooting two, sank them both to put the Cardinals up 28-26. The Cardinals would later return to the line a few plays later with Grey Davis shooting. He then went one for two to set St. Paul up by three at 29-26. The Tigers would later score to make it 29-28 with time running out. The Cardinals failed to capitalize on their next scoring opportunities, and the Tigers had the last possession of the game with 13 seconds left. TSL then called time-out to set up a play to win the game. Their point guard received the ball right away and then started to drive to the lane, and that's where everything went awry for the Tigers. Caught in a two person trap, between Jacob Schneider and Grey Davis, he tried to pass the ball out. Drew Davis was there to pick it off, though, and the Cardinals managed to hold on to win 29-28.
The championship was a tough final game for St. Paul. The Cardinals had a excellent first half trailing St. Jacobi by a score of 23-21, but in the second half, the offense went as cold as ice. The Cardinals would later finish the game out losing by a score of 47-31 for a second place finish. |

Friday January 19 the St. Paul girls A-team defeated Beaver Dam Raiders at home. Right away the Cardinals started strong and finished that way with a 46-5 win. Lydia Meyer led the team with 14 points, and Kasey Struck led in Team rebounds. That momentum carried into the Falcon Tournament which the Cardinals played in on Saturday and Sunday. In the first game on Saturday the Cardinals beat the Jefferson Falcons 30-4. The Cardinals played great defense and kept the Falcons from scoring any points in the second half. KateLynn Kulow was the high scorer with 10 points. Then the Cardinals were matched up with the TSL Tigers. The first quarter the Cardinals were down 7-4, but then in the second quarter St. Paul’s press led to many steals which put them ahead 18-7 at half time. Ashley Wolff led the Cardinal offense with 15 points, while Kelly Tetzlaff pulled down 9 rebounds to lead St. Paul’s.

CARDINALS WIN AGAIN TO GO UNDEFEATED IN CONFERENCE
The St. Paul A team boys came out ready to play against St. Marks in Watertown for their last regular season game of the year on Friday, February 1. The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 23-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The now 1-5 Lions did not appear to be much of a threat to St. Paul as they showed little explosiveness or strong physical play. By half time the Cardinals had a comfortable 28 point lead holding the Lions to just 7 points. In the second half the Cardinals slowed down the tempo a bit taking off the press and managed to close out the game by a final score of 49-23.

Friday night’s game against St. Stephen’s of Beaver Dam was not one of the closest games of the season for St. Paul. The A team boys rushed out ahead early and never looked back, immediately putting on the press giving them a quick 12 point lead, as the Raiders did not seem ready for thCardinals’ aggressive play. By the end of the first quarter St. Paul had a commanding 26-0 lead over St. Stephens. In the second quarter the Cardinals started to slow the tempo down a bit, and after the first half the score was 32-3. The second half was similar to the second quarter with the Cardinals backing off on their press defense and fast-paced offense. After a 26 point first quarter the St. Paul Lake Mills boys only scored 18 points to finish the eighth graders last home game at St. Paul’s with a final victory score of 44-11.
